What is Omkoi Lance-headed Pit Viper?

Protobothrops kelomohy, commonly known as Omkoi Lance-headed Pit Viper, is a venomous pit viper species endemic to Thailand.

Physical Description

Omkoi Lance-headed Pit Viper is a relatively slender but long-pit viper with a large triangular head. The body tends to have a reddish-brown/nearly pink base color with dark brown markings and very fine milky white/yellow lines. The pattern on the tail seems to form ribbons. The head is contrasted on the upper lip and nose below the eyes. The ventral surface is pale in color and has a vague appearance. This pit viper can grow up to 131cm, and possibly longer.

Habitat

So far, Omkoi Lance-headed Pit Viper has been recorded in Chiang Mai Province (but only in Omkoi District) and Tak Province (Tha Song Yang District). The expected elevation is about 600-1200m. At lower elevations, the habitat appears to have changed to a drier deciduous forest type. So far, it's not certain if they happen there. The higher elevations encountered are covered by wetter evergreen forest. Limestone seems to be present in most places, though in small quantities. The Omkoi specimen was found near a stream.

Behavior

There is little that we know about this behavior. Omkoi Lance-headed Pit Viper (Protobothrops kelomohy) is mainly nocturnal and most likely a predominantly terrestrial species. There is no doubt that they can climb trees.

Venom

Only one bite has been reported. No deaths have been reported, but with prompt treatment, the  likelihood of death is low. These pit vipers rely on their camouflage, so they are unlikely to escape. This means that, in the unfortunate case where you don't see it, but unknowingly step on it/grab it, it may decide to bite you.
